Dex drove over to the next village. There were police cars out on the road, and he could see Debbie and Bill standing on doorsteps, talking to residents. Smith was at the far end of what passed for the high street and it was to him that Dex went.

‘Anything?’ he asked.

‘Nothing at all, yet. Except the fact that nobody liked her and she, in her turn, didn’t give a flying fuck about any of them.’

‘And CCTV? Security cameras?’

‘You must be bloody joking, sir. Safe as houses out here. Nothing’s ever happened for a hundred years. People trust each other, watch out for each other.’

‘They didn’t watch out for Lara Millman.’

‘An exception to the general rule, I grant you. But you see that one over there?’ Smith pointed to a large cream-painted house with a showy flashing security box up under the eaves.

‘I do.’

‘A dummy. The vast majority of them are dummies, just a nod towards a deterrent. A couple are operational down the end there, but they’re not even switched on at night. Bill and Debbie are going to carry on for a bit, and uniform, but I’m wrapping it up now.’

‘Right. Then go on up to Mungo’s.’

‘Mungo’s?’

‘Frith Street. Where Lara worked. Talk to the girls she worked with.’

‘Right.’

Dex went back to his car, and sat in it, and looked at the wreckage of Lara Millman’s cottage and thought about murder. And Christie.

Slowly, he drove away.
